Alex Ferguson was appointed Manchester United in 1986 having won the Scottish title and European Cup Winners Cup with Aberdeen. His intention, to 'knock Liverpool off their perch', referring to Liverpool's dominance of English football in the 70's and 80's. By 1990 it looked like mission failed and he may be facing the sack.
However, he guided his team to the FA Cup that year effectively saving his job. The rest they say is history. What followed was a never seen before reign in English football and unlikely ever to be seen again, 38 trophies spanning 27 years including a never done before treble in 1999 of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. In 2011 Ferguson achieved his goal of overcoming Liverpool as they overtook their 18 League titles with United's 19th. There was still time to add title number 20 in his final season as manager in 2013.
His legacy will be forever remembered and will go down as one of, if not the best football managers in the history of the sport.
